How did I discover the vegetarian Fast Food
Restaurant in Pasadena called Orean's Health Express? About 10 years ago I was visiting an eclectic store
in Alhambra Called Pinxit. A flyer was left on my car for a
vegetarian restaurant next to McDonald's. I was intrigued, so I
drove up to Pasadena to check it out. I sampled a (non-dairy) shake
and (vegetarian) Chicken Burger. I was pleasantly surprised. To this
day, I will go out of my way to grab a peanut butter & carob shake
(sounds weird, but is absolutely yummy).
When you visit Orean's Health Express, be sure to try the Chicken Burger. I also
like the African Tostada and the Philly Cheese with
Peppers & Grilled Onions. My sister loves the Chili
Cheese Fries and the Tamale.
The shakes & "ice cream" are dairy free, so if
you're lactose intolerant, but crave a shake, you need to try one of
these. I'd have to say the straws they give you with their shakes
are a bit too thin for the thick consistency of the shake. I
sometimes grab a straw from across the street at the golden arches.
(I like their straws better). The shakes come in the basic flavors;
Vanilla, Strawberry & Carob (chocolate). If you're feeling exotic,
order the Chai or Cappacino flavor, and if you're feeling
adventurous, ask for a Peanut Butter & Carob shake. Yummy!
Everything on Orean's menu is vegetarian. It's a
little pricier than McDonald's across the street, but I'd bet it's a
lot healthier.
When you're out in Pasadena drop on by. Orean's
Fast Food Restaurant is on Lake Avenue (north of the 210
Freeway). It's directly across Lake Avenue from Roscoe's Chicken
and Waffles and on the same side of the street as McDonald's.
If you're in a hurry, call your order in ahead of
time, but if you have some time to enjoy your meal use the walk-up
window. Everything is made to order, so the food takes a bit longer
than the average fast food joint. When you're waiting, just remember
that saying from childhood, "good things come to those who wait."
